Interview reply update

Up until now, I have not received a reply from James Wan yet. But as for Fahmi Reza, Aizat has reached out to him and we got a reply. He said that he is able to do an interview with us and he asked us either if we wanted to do the interview through face to face or skype. As for the others, they had not reply yet.

We updated Mr. Charles about this and he told us to get a microphone for our camera and also a tripod as soon as possible. He also told us to keep in touch with Fahmi Reza and set a time and date with him for the interview.

An Artist/Designer in the Art Industry to interview (Group Work)

Our group decided that we all should have 1 person each that we would like to interview for our future assignment. All we had to do was to pick one person and have our research done on them. For me, I've chosen James Wan.

James Wan is an Australian film producer, screenwriter and film director from Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. He is widely known for directing Saw and creating Billy The Puppet. James is also known for producing the latest horror film Annabelle.

As of August 2014, he is direct the next biggest movie Fast & Furious 7, which is due to release on 2015.

James Wan with the cast of Fast & Furious 7

To me, he made such an impact to the society of filming because it shows us that even though you're from somewhere which is not really recognized internationally you can still make it and chase your dream. Because of his works, it makes me think that anything is possible.

Some Questions to be Ask

1. What made you want to work in the filming industry?
2. What did it felt like when your first feature length film "Stygian" won "Best Guerrilla" Films at Melbourne Underground Film Festival (MUFF) in 2000?

3. What if one of the films you directed or produced did not receive any positive feedbacks or comments from the society but instead you keep getting negative feedbacks and probably even get bash by the society. Would you just give up on filming?

4. What did it felt like when "The Conjuring" won the "Fangoria Chainsaw Awards"?

5. If you have never entered the filming industry, where do you think you will be and what do you think you'll be doing?

My Favourite Artist In The Art Industry (WEEK 1)

Gilles Beloeil

Gilles-beloeil

On our first week of Contextual Studies, Mr. Charles gave briefly explained to us what is contextual studies about and then told us all to talk about our favourite artist in the Art Industry. To me, Gilles Beloeil is the one that I like the most. He is a Illustrator, Concept Artist and a Digital Matte Painter. He was born in Montreal, Canada. He began his career in 2002 with 4-Elements Studios and worked on several tv commercials and advertising then slowly expanded himself to film and computer gaming industries.

He captured my attention because he works with a game company called Ubisoft which is widely known for Assassin's Creed. He did a lot of illustration to digital matte painting for the Asssassin's Creed series from the first ever Assassin's Creed to the current one which will be releasing in two months times Assassin's Creed: Unity. Not only that, he did cinematics for Assassin's Creed, Far Cry 2 and the Ubisoft Short Film : Assassin's Creed: Lineage.

I admire his concept arts for Assassin's Creed. The way he does it makes me feel calm and it also looks realistic. Here are some examples of his works :

An illustration of Assassin's Creed: Revalation

A concept art of Rome

A concept art of Assassin's Creed III

A matte painting of Boston.

Not only that, he did some Filmography for these movies:
  • Pinocchio 3000 (Lighting Team Lead, 2003)
  • La dernière incarnation (3D All-rounder, 2004)
  • Alone in the Dark (Lead Lighting, 2004)
  • Charlie Jade (Digital Matte Painter, 2004) - TV series
  • Final Destination 3 (Sequence Lead Lighting, 2005)
  • Fantastic 4 (Lighting TD and Sequence Lead Lighting, 2005)
  • Happy Feet (Lighter/Compositor, 2006)
  • Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D (Sequence Lead Lighting and Concept Artist, 2007)
  • Assassin's Creed: Lineage (2008–2009) - Ubisoft

Here is a link to his website: http://gillesbeloeil.viewbook.com/
There you can find some more of his work and more about him.

At the end of the class, Mr. Charles said that we all did some good researches but research doesn't always mean finding the positive stuff about them. He said that we should look into their failures as well so that when it comes into an interview with them, we can ask about how they felt when they failed during this moment and what kept them going.

Colour Wheel (Principals of Design)

For our colour wheel project, we decided to use strings to represent our colour wheel. We used mounting boards as our frames as it was cheaper than buying real actual frame. Our work was easy so we didn't really had to meet up to do it together. We would meet up once in awhile to discuss on our progress and as well as the materials we needed.

Hung up before presentation

A compiled version

To be honest, I really thought that the complied version looked better than it being hung. Ms. Maslisa said that we should had increase the thread's thickness as it goes further behind. Overall, we were happy with our work but I thought that we should had done something much more better.

Paper Cut Out (Principals of Design)

At this time, we were asked to do a paper cut out design using only a scalpel or a blade. She asked us to do our design on the spot and the thing that popped out of my mind was Tribal designs. She was not really pleased with my sketches at first and told me to go back and think about it. That was when I came out with a Zodiac Tribal design. I used my zodiac which was a Taurus to help me design my cut out.

My symmetrical design. A Taurus head.

Asymmetrical design.

She accepted my designs and told me to get working on it as she wanted to see our progress on the next week. It was a tough week as I had never did paper cut out in my life at all. The hardest part was to get the symmetrical design the same and not different. As for the asymmetrical it was easy and relaxing to cut.

We all took turns to present our work. When it was my turn she said she loved it and said that it would look nice if it was a tattoo. I was proud of myself and happy that everyone else's work turned out great as well.

Rules of Third

My subject matter was doodling, Ms. Maslisa said it was plain as I only took pictures of me drawing on a blank paper until it was filled up. I was disappointed with myself as I thought that I could had done better. She said that it was nice and cute but I should had did something different rather than fill an empty piece of paper.

Art Movement Self Portrait (Principals of Design)

For this assignment, we were asked to make a research about Art Movements. For me, I chose Futurism, Expressionism and Cubism. We had to sketch and tell her what we know from what we researched.

 Futurism Sketch

Futurism or Futurismo was an artistic and social movement that originated in Italy in the early 20th century. It emphasizes the power of our future. It was focused more on machines, speed, light and youth. Ms. Maslisa said I had a great understanding towards futurism and was made my main art movement for now.

Abstract/Expressionism

As I explained my expressionism sketch to Ms. Maslisa, she corrected me and said that this was actually more towards abstract rather than expressionism. She rejected this art movement and only left me with Futurism and Cubism.

Cubism

Cubism is where every lines on a human face meets each other like a cracked mirror. She said I still need to do more research on my cubism. That was when I knew it had to do a futuristic art movement.

Ms. Maslisa then gave us a week to complete a sketch of our self-portrait of the art movement that she decided for us and wanted to see our progress as well.

My Sketch of the futurism art movement.

Progress
At first it was tough for me because I never did such kind of colouring at all. I had to explore and learn myself which made me happy because I have learnt something new.

Progress 2
It was getting better slowly and was making me happier.

Finished worked.
It was tough for me to colour as I had to manage my time well but I was never good with time management at all but in the end everything was finished. We had to present on the day itself and she gave us a few comments on what we should had done.

She said she liked it that I took her advice but told me that I should had coloured the background and not leave it white. In the end of the day, everyone was proud of their work and so was Ms. Maslisa.

Mind Map and Self-Portrait (Principals of Design)

For our first class of Principals in Design, we were given two tasks to do which was making a mind map about ourselves as a way to introduce ourselves to the whole class. Not only that, we had to make a self portrait only out of objects and not drawing.

My mind map

Self-portrait

It was challenging and fun at the same time as we only had 30 minutes to finish up everything. It's was just a mere grab and go and come up with something. After everyone had presented we were asked to do a research about Art movements and were asked to choose 3 for our up coming assignments. We had to sketch and tell her what we understand about the art movements that we chose by next week.
