Working on Editing (Contextual Studies)

Right now, Aizat and I are working on the video editing for Engku Iman. First we have to get the voice over matched with the video and then figure out in what way we want to edit the video like. For example, having different themes or staying with a certain theme. Not only that, we have to juggle with time management as we have other final works to do as well. I will be updating more soon.

Interview with Adrien Kent and Engku Iman

On the 28th November, we all went as a group to interview Adrien and Engku. The first session was in the afternoon with Adrien at Alexis in Bangsar.

After we have done our interview with him, we had a lot of time to spare so we decided to go over to two of his place he worked on called Food Foundry and Butter & Beans at Happy Mansion, Seksyen 17, PJ.

After that, we went over to Sabrina's house to rest and have dinner before going off to interview Engku Iman. We met in her studio at Wangsa Maju which is just close by to Sabrina's Place.

Engku Iman (Contextual Studies)

We found Engku Iman through her instagram. Her work caught our eyes because it is straight to the point and some of them are controversial. This is like the total opposite of Adrien Kent (Adrien Ritzal). One of her works, Karipap Cipap really caught our eyes and made us see things differently. So, Aizat contacted her and we got an interview with her on the same day as Adrien.

Karipap Cipap

Karipap Cipap is actually a Curry puff with a vagina shape on it. According to her, it is how she express herself through her work.

Adrien Kent (Contextual Studies)

The other day Nadia stumbled upon Adrien Kent's website as she was going through Interior Designs on the web. She noticed that he looked familiar to her and she soon realized that he was one of her brother's friend and that they have met a few times in the past years. In an instant we knew that we had to get an interview with him.

Nadia then contacted him through facebook to set a date for an interview.

Unavailable

Unfortunately for us, Fahmi Reza was unavailable to do an interview with us because he had a very packed schedule and he had to go off to Hong Kong, Mexico and America in a few weeks time. He told us through Aizat and apologize as well.

Not only that, Jovian's Assistant told Nadia that he is unavailable as well due to busy schedules. As for Jalani and Rizalman, both have not replied to us yet.

Assignment 5 (Final) - Paint to Music

Today, after our presentation for our monogram and logo, we were given a task where we just let our feelings out as we listen to two playlists. One ready made by Ms. Lisa which will be classical music and the other one by all of us which will be Modern day music. We had 1 hour to work on each piece.

Requirements :
Minimum 2 A3 size canvas. (Any type of canvas)
Any painting materials - No restriction.

I ended up using spray paints and mounting board as my canvas. Ms. Lisa gave us a few minutes to prepare then we were to start when she starts one of the playlist. Basically, what I understood from this was that Ms. Lisa wanted us to express ourselves through the music we listen to because for once, she wanted us to be free and to be limited by her instructions.

Setting up

Work done while listening to the first playlist selected by all of us (Modern day music).

I used a cardboard to cover and sprayed onto it which eventually formed the lines. This playlist was from full of bass to instrumental so it made me express myself in a mixed feeling. That explains why there a so many lines of paints together. It mixes and blends well with the surroundings just like modern day songs.

Work done while listening to the second playlist selected by Ms. Lisa (Classical Music).

I gave it a glossy light coloured galaxy kind of look because to me, the classical music gave me a soothing kind of feel and made me do something very light coloured. It was peaceful and relaxing at the same time. Unlike the first playlist, I was surprised that it turned out better than I expected.

Overall, I loved doing this assignment. For once I feel that I wasn't so restricted and that I could finally express myself. Even though I've been through ups and down with Ms. Lisa, I truly appreciate every moment I had with her because she thought me and brought me up well even if we only knew each other for almost a year now. I'm pretty sure I've improved a lot with her guidance and the amount of times she kept scolding me on how I have to manage my time well. The moments we all spent together in class from the first semester until now really taught me a lot. I'm happy that I was able to be under Ms. Lisa's care and guidance during my time in Foundation. Honestly, I'm going to miss being lectured and praised by Ms. Lisa. We all wish you good luck in your future!

Assignment 4 - Monogram Design

We were lecture about our Final assignment about monograms and logos combined. After the lecture, we were to look for 5 or more of some monograms and logos design that you like by snapping pictures of it. Here are some of the pictures that I personally like.

We all headed back into class and Ms. Lisa told us all to form a group in each table and show everyone on that table the pictures that you have taken and they must give a word to describe it. I showed everyone on the table and they said I was a grugy type. I kinda agree with it because my style is abit grungy and mostly black and white. So I did some sketches and Ms. Lisa ended up with this one.

She told me to play with the perspective so I did and ended with one like this and then photo-stated them into smaller sizes.

Progression :

 Book cover
 Iphone 6 Casing
 Placemat
 File holder
Shoe box

Fabric Bag

Poster
Pattern

Overall, it was a fun process. Learning how to use a spray can was awesome! I might even take it up as a hobby. Being sick wasn't helpful at all as I was struggling because I was sick. But it did not drag me down, I put the sickness behind me and got on with my work. Right now it is 3:43 a.m. as I'm writing this because I ran out of spray paint and had to walked all around Subang just to find a hardware store. It was tiring but worth it in the end. Despite being sick, coughing every time I smelt aerosol and all the obstacles I have to go through, it was truly fun and exciting to be trying something new. You can say it was a good and bad experience. The only thing that was time consuming was to wait for the paint to dry and I swear, it felt like years. Anyways, cheers to more upcoming sleepless nights!

Assignment 3 - Unconventional Batik

For this assignment, we were asked to be in a group of 4. No less, no more. So, I grouped up with Wafaa, Min Wei and Shu Ling. It was a bit hard to get our ideas together but in the end we agreed with a four-seasons theme.

Sketches :

Ms. Lisa ended up choosing the tree branches and told us to add animals into each a3 sketch later on. We ended up adding in the four-seasons theme that we wanted as you can see in the second picture. We divided our part for the seasons starting with Winter - Min Wei, Spring - Shu Ling, Summer - Wafaa, Autumn - Me. I wanted to put a bird in a cage in my sketch until I saw the sketch the others did so I made some modifications and added a cardinal bird.

Progression :

Helping out Wafaa with hers

Removing some of the excess colours

The end outcome after the wash.

Finished product.

Coming from Sarawak, batik is a thing that most Sarawakians know how to do except me! It was a fun experience in the Batik Factory. There were so many things to do in such little time from sketching onto the cloth, waxing the outline of the sketch to painting. It was challenging to do the waxing as it was cramped with everyone next to each other. When it came to painting, I literally used all my force into brushing the cloth so everyone around me was affected by it and kept scolding me but it was funny for me at the same time. The funniest part about this trip was that on our way to the factory, everyone was so active and hyper in the bus but while on our way back to campus, everyone was literally dead tired and sleeping in the bus. Thank you Ms. Lisa for this wonderful trip and experience! :)
