Assignment 3 - Unconventional Batik
Sng Wee Jie
For this assignment, we were asked to be in a group of 4. No less, no more. So, I grouped up with Wafaa, Min Wei and Shu Ling. It was a bit hard to get our ideas together but in the end we agreed with a four-seasons theme.Sketches :
Ms. Lisa ended up choosing the tree branches and told us to add animals into each a3 sketch later on. We ended up adding in the four-seasons theme that we wanted as you can see in the second picture. We divided our part for the seasons starting with Winter - Min Wei, Spring - Shu Ling, Summer - Wafaa, Autumn - Me. I wanted to put a bird in a cage in my sketch until I saw the sketch the others did so I made some modifications and added a cardinal bird.
Progression :
Helping out Wafaa with hers
Removing some of the excess colours
The end outcome after the wash.
Finished product.
Coming from Sarawak, batik is a thing that most Sarawakians know how to do except me! It was a fun experience in the Batik Factory. There were so many things to do in such little time from sketching onto the cloth, waxing the outline of the sketch to painting. It was challenging to do the waxing as it was cramped with everyone next to each other. When it came to painting, I literally used all my force into brushing the cloth so everyone around me was affected by it and kept scolding me but it was funny for me at the same time. The funniest part about this trip was that on our way to the factory, everyone was so active and hyper in the bus but while on our way back to campus, everyone was literally dead tired and sleeping in the bus. Thank you Ms. Lisa for this wonderful trip and experience! :)
