Assignment 5 (Final) - Paint to Music
Sng Wee Jie
Today, after our presentation for our monogram and logo, we were given a task where we just let our feelings out as we listen to two playlists. One ready made by Ms. Lisa which will be classical music and the other one by all of us which will be Modern day music. We had 1 hour to work on each piece.Requirements :
Minimum 2 A3 size canvas. (Any type of canvas)
Any painting materials - No restriction.
I ended up using spray paints and mounting board as my canvas. Ms. Lisa gave us a few minutes to prepare then we were to start when she starts one of the playlist. Basically, what I understood from this was that Ms. Lisa wanted us to express ourselves through the music we listen to because for once, she wanted us to be free and to be limited by her instructions.
Setting up
Work done while listening to the first playlist selected by all of us (Modern day music).
I used a cardboard to cover and sprayed onto it which eventually formed the lines. This playlist was from full of bass to instrumental so it made me express myself in a mixed feeling. That explains why there a so many lines of paints together. It mixes and blends well with the surroundings just like modern day songs.
Work done while listening to the second playlist selected by Ms. Lisa (Classical Music).
I gave it a glossy light coloured galaxy kind of look because to me, the classical music gave me a soothing kind of feel and made me do something very light coloured. It was peaceful and relaxing at the same time. Unlike the first playlist, I was surprised that it turned out better than I expected.
Overall, I loved doing this assignment. For once I feel that I wasn't so restricted and that I could finally express myself. Even though I've been through ups and down with Ms. Lisa, I truly appreciate every moment I had with her because she thought me and brought me up well even if we only knew each other for almost a year now. I'm pretty sure I've improved a lot with her guidance and the amount of times she kept scolding me on how I have to manage my time well. The moments we all spent together in class from the first semester until now really taught me a lot. I'm happy that I was able to be under Ms. Lisa's care and guidance during my time in Foundation. Honestly, I'm going to miss being lectured and praised by Ms. Lisa. We all wish you good luck in your future!
Assignment 4 - Monogram Design
Sng Wee Jie
We were lecture about our Final assignment about monograms and logos combined. After the lecture, we were to look for 5 or more of some monograms and logos design that you like by snapping pictures of it. Here are some of the pictures that I personally like.
We all headed back into class and Ms. Lisa told us all to form a group in each table and show everyone on that table the pictures that you have taken and they must give a word to describe it. I showed everyone on the table and they said I was a grugy type. I kinda agree with it because my style is abit grungy and mostly black and white. So I did some sketches and Ms. Lisa ended up with this one.
She told me to play with the perspective so I did and ended with one like this and then photo-stated them into smaller sizes.
Progression :
Iphone 6 Casing
Placemat
File holder
Shoe box
Fabric Bag
Pattern
Overall, it was a fun process. Learning how to use a spray can was awesome! I might even take it up as a hobby. Being sick wasn't helpful at all as I was struggling because I was sick. But it did not drag me down, I put the sickness behind me and got on with my work. Right now it is 3:43 a.m. as I'm writing this because I ran out of spray paint and had to walked all around Subang just to find a hardware store. It was tiring but worth it in the end. Despite being sick, coughing every time I smelt aerosol and all the obstacles I have to go through, it was truly fun and exciting to be trying something new. You can say it was a good and bad experience. The only thing that was time consuming was to wait for the paint to dry and I swear, it felt like years. Anyways, cheers to more upcoming sleepless nights!
Assignment 3 - Unconventional Batik
Sng Wee Jie
For this assignment, we were asked to be in a group of 4. No less, no more. So, I grouped up with Wafaa, Min Wei and Shu Ling. It was a bit hard to get our ideas together but in the end we agreed with a four-seasons theme.Sketches :
Ms. Lisa ended up choosing the tree branches and told us to add animals into each a3 sketch later on. We ended up adding in the four-seasons theme that we wanted as you can see in the second picture. We divided our part for the seasons starting with Winter - Min Wei, Spring - Shu Ling, Summer - Wafaa, Autumn - Me. I wanted to put a bird in a cage in my sketch until I saw the sketch the others did so I made some modifications and added a cardinal bird.
Progression :
Helping out Wafaa with hers
Removing some of the excess colours
The end outcome after the wash.
Finished product.
Coming from Sarawak, batik is a thing that most Sarawakians know how to do except me! It was a fun experience in the Batik Factory. There were so many things to do in such little time from sketching onto the cloth, waxing the outline of the sketch to painting. It was challenging to do the waxing as it was cramped with everyone next to each other. When it came to painting, I literally used all my force into brushing the cloth so everyone around me was affected by it and kept scolding me but it was funny for me at the same time. The funniest part about this trip was that on our way to the factory, everyone was so active and hyper in the bus but while on our way back to campus, everyone was literally dead tired and sleeping in the bus. Thank you Ms. Lisa for this wonderful trip and experience! :)
Assignment 2 - Expansion of the square
Sng Wee Jie
We were given a lecture about squares, at first I was super confuse on why she is giving us on a lecture about a shape. I slowly understood what she wanted as we were approaching the end of the lecture then she hit us all with a question "What is your square?". There were probably more question marks on everyone's mind than knowing what their square is. Basically it was about anything and not about you. During that period of time, I was kinda into feathers and I was lucky that I brought my drawing book of the feather I drew the other night.
She saw it and approved it and also said that I should be sure on my asymmetrical and symmetrical design and as well as the details.
Progression:
Asymmetrical design

Symmetrical design
Honestly, I wasn't really happy with the outcome. I believe I could had done better but I let my personal problems get into me. Not only that the passing of my grandfather affected me as well. After this assignment, I thought to myself that I should always stay positive and stay strong. I failed 6 times for the asymmetrical one and once for the symmetrical one. Failing to cut it perfectly 6 times also kinda made me gave up and eventually I came out with a bad outcome. I promised myself to not let these stuff bother me and do better on my next assignment.
Assignment 1 - Unconventional Self-Portrait
Sng Wee Jie
Ms. Maslisa wasn't able to attend the first class but she posted up on our facebook group and gave us our brief for our first assignment. She told us to get working on our sketches and ideas which must be shown to her on Monday (29th September). While everyone was busy packing their bags because Ms. Maslisa could not come, I came across a work done by two of the diploma students.
It's basically the form of a water droplet dropping onto a water surface and creating the waves. They used screws to do this and this eventually gave me an idea to do something in a 3D way.
I did some research and came across Andrew Myers. Here are some examples of his work.
As I show my research to Ms. Maslisa, she told me to substitute the screws with bobby pins.
Progression
Bobby Pins
End Result
It was challenging as I had to find the right type of bobby pins and the right choice of colour. Not only that, I was always told during the first semester that I have a time management problem and I took this up to challenge myself. It took me hours to slowly pin it and trying to figure out a 3D effect. It was a troublesome work but I was happy with the outcome. Basically in this semester, I want to try and explore more out of my own safe zone. This assignment shows the more colourful side of me!
